About

The Space Between is a therapist-led, semi-structured support group exploring the psychology of loneliness and the different ways we can experience isolation — within ourselves, in our relationships, in our connection with the natural world and in our relationship with something beyond ourselves.

Drawing on existential psychotherapy and philosophy, the group explores loneliness as more than simply being alone. We will consider the different forms of disconnection we may experience and the ways these can shape how we understand ourselves, others and our place in the world.

Across six weeks, the group offers a space to think together, exchange experiences and perspectives, and explore what it means to feel connected — and what happens when that connection is lost.

What to expect

Week 1 — Introduction & Connection
Introductions, icebreakers and establishing a shared group agreement. An opportunity to explore what loneliness and connection mean to us and consider the different ways isolation can be experienced.

Week 2 — Isolation from Self
Exploring our relationship with ourselves. What does it mean to feel disconnected from who we are, our emotions, our bodies or our sense of identity? We will consider authenticity, self-understanding and the experience of feeling like a stranger to ourselves.

Week 3 — Isolation from Others

Exploring loneliness within relationships and our wider social world. What does it mean to feel unseen, misunderstood or disconnected from others, even when we are surrounded by people? We will consider belonging, intimacy, relationships and the tension between connection and individuality.

Week 4 — Isolation from Nature

Exploring our relationship with the natural world and our place within it. What happens when we experience ourselves as separate from nature, our environment or the wider world? We will consider belonging, embodiment, interconnectedness and what nature might offer us in our experience of connection.

Week 5 — Isolation from God

Exploring spiritual and existential isolation. What does it mean to feel disconnected from God, faith, spirituality or a sense of something beyond ourselves? We will consider questions of meaning, transcendence, doubt and the human longing to feel connected to something greater.

Week 6 — Closing Reflections

Reflecting on the questions, experiences and perspectives that have emerged throughout the group. An opportunity to consider what connection means to us, what we have discovered about loneliness and what each participant is taking away from the experience.
